Job Summary | Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for one (1) full‐time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Communication Design within the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM). Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səḻ ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil‐Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world‐renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers. The Bachelor of Design in Communication Design, situated in the Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM), focuses on developing critically engaged and contextually aware design work. Communication Design practices are multi-layered and interwoven to create many ways and means of communicating. They can include: modes of communication and discourse, production and material practices, and critical and political approaches. Design at Emily Carr University responds to and engages the world around us, focusing on creating compelling messaging, narratives and experiences grounded in the ecological, political and socio-technical contexts of contemporary societies. All majors in the DDM Faculty share values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, critical engagement with technology, new research methods, new approaches to design, and the making of imaginative and provocative work. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES Candidates should be able to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Graduate Studies, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. Candidates should be equally fluent in current design discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. The review of applications will begin on February 1st, 2024 and will continue until the position has been filled. Subject to budgetary approval, we anticipate commencement in August 2024. Salary and rank will be commensurate with professional status and teaching experience. Salary range $68,385 to $109,584 per annum.
