Position Title Continuing Studies Instructors – User Experience Design
Job Summary
The Continuing Studies Department at Emily Carr University of Art + Design is seeking experienced user experience designers, user interface designers, product designers, visual designers, product managers, project managers, team leaders and project leads to join our team of instructors for the User Experience Design Certificate program.

The User Experience Design Certificate is an 8-month career-focused program that teaches students industry-relevant skills. Grounded in an ethical human-centered approach, students will develop technical, creative, and collaborative skills in UX design while gaining hands-on experience in solving real world problems through team projects. Individuals should hold a degree in UX Design, Product Design, Interaction Design, or related field.  Candidates should demonstrate a passion for life-long learning and have measurable and diverse industry experience within the field of UX design. We are looking for active designers who are looking to be part of a vibrant learning community.

 Scheduling: Full Time Program Courses are scheduled weekdays, either 8:30am – 12:30pm (for cohorts starting in April) or 1:30pm – 5:30pm (for cohorts starting in September). Applicants must be available for in-person learning.

Scheduling: Part Time Program Courses are scheduled weekday evenings and weekends, and may be offered in person or online. Please indicate availability in your application. Continuing Studies instructors are contracted to teach at an hourly rate of $88.45.

Duties include:
  • Preparing course syllabi, lesson plans, assignments and activities suitable for online and/or on-campus learning
  • Preparing, populating and updating course content and resources in Moodle, Emily Carr’s Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Supporting diverse student learning experiences, providing proactive feedback and guidance, completing assessments, and inputting grades
  • Regularly communicating and collaborating with CS Administration and CS Technicians
Required Qualifications
We are looking for individuals who have:
  • 2+ years professional experience working in the tech and/or design industry.
  • expert knowledge in current UX Design practices, tools and workflows
  • experience with concept development, creative processes, collaboration, and/or project development
  • strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • experience preparing presentations, leading discussions and sharing information with diverse audiences
  • considerable experience with different feedback strategies that support a positive learning environment, help build knowledge and improve skills
  • the ability to inspire and encourage others to learn and develop new skills
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
Priority will be given to candidates with:
  • Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residence status (at this time we are unable to hire international applicants for instructional contract roles)
  • Masters degree or equivalent 
    Significant experience working in industry, who are also interested in sharing their knowledge with others
  • Experience working with adult learners from diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds at the post-secondary level; prior experience with mentorship or training also considered an asset
  • Experience developing lesson plans; prior experience developing internal training modules or leading workshops also considered an asset

Preference will be given to candidates offering the following skills:
  • Extensive knowledge of User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design practices and trends
  • Knowledge in visual fundamentals, contemporary design theory, content strategy, information architecture and accessibility
  • Expert computer literacy across a variety of design tools and Adobe Creative Cloud core programs
  • Expert research skills, data analysis skills and presentation skills
  • Experience in concept development for digital devices and platforms using a variety of techniques
  • Knowledge of professional communication, interviewing techniques, presentation skills and storytelling
  • Ability to sequence and adapt teaching schedule and style to successfully reach diverse learners
  • Strong class management skills, including implementation of equitable practice, positive disciplinary skills, empathetic communication, and student-centered learning
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

For those with little or no prior teaching experience, Continuing Studies offers support in the form of group workshops, standardized worksheets and individual meetings to assist in the process of course development and instruction.
