Position Title Continuing Studies Instructor – Creative Professional Practices
Job Summary
The Continuing Studies Department at Emily Carr University of Art + Design is seeking a Creative Professional Practices Instructor with a breadth of knowledge in the creative industry in topics such as:
  • Professional practices for artists and/or designers
  • Grant writing for residencies or exhibitions
  • Portfolio Mentorship
  • Artist/personal websites and social media
  • Business planning for creative practitioners
  • Financial practices for gig work
  • Funding opportunities and budgeting
  • Client relations
  • Leadership
  • Project management
 
Applicants should anticipate a range of students from various disciplines and backgrounds looking for professional skills and guidance to strategize for their creative growth. 

Successful applicants will be added to our pool of Continuing Studies educators who are contracted per term.  

ECU Continuing studies adult and/or youth individual courses are scheduled per term, once per week on weekday evenings and/or weekends, and may be offered in person or online. Continuing Studies instructors are contracted to teach at an hourly rate of $76.00.

Instructional contracts involve:
  • Preparing course syllabi, lesson plans, assignments and activities suitable for online and/or on-campus learning
  • Preparing, populating and updating course content and resources in Moodle, Emily Carr’s Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Supporting diverse student learning experiences, providing proactive feedback and guidance, completing assessments, and inputting grades 
  • Regularly communicating and collaborating with CS Administration and CS Technicians 
Required Qualifications
Applicants with a degree or practice in a relevant field, such as Art, Design, Curatorial Studies, Business Management, or Arts Administration and/or a combination of comparable professional experience is required.
 
We are seeking candidates with the following skills and experience:
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in the creative industry 
  • Professional development and leadership skills including project management, business acumen, creative entrepreneurship, communication, workplace culture and community
  • Strong network connections within creative industry
  • Demonstrated success in writing grant proposals
  • Holistic understanding of the challenges and nuances creative practitioners face when entering the professional landscape
  • Industry-aligned knowledge of creative professional practices
  • Demonstrated passion in supporting the artistic community in real-world applications
  • Considerable knowledge of critique and feedback strategies
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience teaching learners from diverse creative, cultural, and educational backgrounds would be an asset
  • Experience developing lesson plans and preparing content for online and/or on-campus 
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of teaching or mentorship experience, preferably in professional development or a related field
  • Experience using adaptive and inclusive student engagement methods
  • Experience with online education (including Moodle and Zoom) an asset. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 

Continuing Studies offers support in the form of group workshops, standardized worksheets, and individual meetings to assist in the process of course preparation and instruction.
